About Best Lawyers and Its Methodology
Best LawyersⓇ is one of the world’s most established and trusted legal rankings publications. For over 40 years, it has recognized top attorneys across various practice areas using a selection process grounded entirely in peer review. The organization’s goal is to identify lawyers who are respected by their peers for their talent, ethics, and professionalism.
The selection process begins with peer nominations. Most nominations come from clients, fellow attorneys, or law firm marketing teams. Self-voting is not allowed. Nominees’ names are also removed from their own ballots.
Every lawyer recognized in a previous edition is automatically nominated again, but they must continue receiving strong feedback to stay on the list. Best LawyersⓇ recommends that nominees have at least 10 years of experience before seeking a nomination to ensure they have a well-established reputation.
After collecting the nominations, Best LawyersⓇ distributes ballots to lawyers in the same geographic area and legal field. These ballots are customized and ask voters to rate nominees based on a simple but meaningful question: “If you couldn’t take a case yourself, would you refer it to this lawyer?” Ratings range from one to five, and voters may also leave comments.
The Best LawyersⓇ research team then reviews each nominee’s scores and comments. They also verify that the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and free from disciplinary action. If the candidate passes all checks, Best LawyersⓇ notifies them of their inclusion in the next edition. To ensure the process remains merit-based and unbiased, Best LawyersⓇ does not charge any fees for participation or recognition.
