BKW Family Law is proud to announce that our own Megan Watson began a two-year term as Philly VIP’s (a/k/a Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program/Philadephia VIP) president this month. I sat down with Megan to ask about her Philadelphia VIP journey, as it goes back farther than most people know.

A: Since I started at BKW, you’ve instilled in me to be very dedicated to pro bono work. How did you get involved with Philadelphia VIP?

M: My very first ever custody trial was about 24 years ago; it was a pro bono case through Philadelphia VIP. It engrained in me the feeling that people should be able to have legal representation regardless of their financial situation. Ever since then, I have been a strong advocate of pro bono work and closely involved with Philadelphia VIP.

A: Do you think the culture of pro bono work is important in a firm?

M: Yes! I’m proud to say that BKW Family Law has won Philly VIP’s Brennan Award in five different years and the Citizens Bank ***. I have also been named to the First Judicial District Pro Bono Honor Roll for seven years and was also honored to receive the Distinguished Advocate Award in 2015 for volunteering with the Support Center for Child Advocates.

Pro bono work is an important part of our practice and we’ve remained dedicated to providing free services to as many people as we’re able to help through local non-profits.

A: Rumor has it that you never wanted to be board president. How did this happen?

M: As the years have gone on, I became more and more involved in Philadelphia VIP’s mission as I progressed from being a volunteer to becoming a committee co-chair and eventually Board Vice-President. I am fortunate enough that it has been a natural extension to becoming president for this term.

A: One last question for you: what is your main goal during your term as president?

M: Both VIP and I are very focused on volunteer engagement. We cannot do the work we do for Philadelphians without our wonderful volunteers – lawyers, paralegals, staff members.  I am hoping to not only increase the number of volunteers, but also, to increase the number of volunteers returning to help another VIP client.
